Was Lennie's Child like Manner the Reason he Had Killed Curley's wife?

In Part 5 Lennie kills Curley's wife. Shocking as it is, it didn't surprise me. When Lennie accidentally killed the dog, he gets mad at the dog first. A common thing most children will do is blame anyone BUT themselves. Soon after that Curley's wife entered the barn and started talking to Lennie. She tells him to "'feel [her hair] right aroun' there an' see how soft it is'" (90). Just like the incident in weed Lennie doesn't want to let go of the soft hair. When Curley's wife starts screaming, Lennie covers her mouth in order to keep him out of trouble. In result of Lennie covering her mouth he snaps her neck. He doesn't realize what he has done until it is too late. Lennie runs away from fear of resentment or punishment (like any other child). Personally, I think that Lennie was only trying to keep himself out of trouble and thanks to his child like behavior he just created more than there was to begin with. Do you agree?

How come Crooks seems to get along better with Lennie and Candy compared to the others?

In part 4 I noticed that even though Crooks initially kicked Candy and Lennie out of his room, he seemed to enjoy their company. When Lennie first goes into Crooks room they surprisingly have a lot in common. Crooks asks Lennie if George, "'Jus' talks on, an' you don't know what the h*ll it's all about?'" (70). Crooks relates to this because he doesn't always understand the others on the farm, and they don't understand him. When Candy joins them in Crooks room they talk for a while and even Crooks is enjoying their company. Unfortunately, Curley's Wife comes into the room asking where Curley is, and is told to leave almost immediately. Since Crooks was getting annoyed with Curley's wife he speak back to her. She threatens him and reminds him how others see him. When she leaves he says, "'You guys comin' in an' settin' made me forget'" (82). When Crooks admits this he is implying that Lennie and Candy made h...

Why was George Putting so Much Trust in Slim?

One of the things that stuck out to me in part three (p. 52-65), was how George was telling Slim many things that he wouldn't mention to just anyone. George told Slim why Lennie and him left Weed and many things about Lennie. George turned to slim and asked, "'You wouldn' tell? ...No, 'course you wouldn'.'" (41). Where did this trust come from? Why is George so certain Slim can be trusted? Personally, I believe that George tells Slim these things because of Slims reputation and welcoming attitude towards him and Lennie. After all of their run ins with people on the farm who care more about themselves then others makes me a bit skeptical of Slim's behavior. Slim gives Lennie a chance to watch the pups in the barn and Sits with George to talk. All of these instances seem a bit too good to be true. Another thing that adds to my suspicion is how with others he doesn't seem nearly as nice or caring. For example, when candy is told that his beloved d...

Is Lennie's Obedience to George a Good Asset to Their Relationship?

The thing that really grabbed my attention when I was reading part 2 was how obedient Lennie was to George. Mainly on pages 29, 30, and 31 George tells Lennie what to do and Lennie complies. For example, "'You keep away from Curley, Lennie.'" "'Sure I will, George. I won't say a word.'" (30) Without question Lennie obeys almost immediately. For that, I wonder how their relationship came to this leader follower status. George Leads and Lennie follows. Since Lennie seems to rely on George telling him what and what not to do what would happen if George somehow disappeared or their relationship ended. Would Lennie be able to function or work on his own? I believe that slowly George should learn to let Lennie do things on his own and let him learn his lesson and face his own problems. But, If there is a big change would it ruin their relationship? I honestly believe a big change like that would strain their relation ship, yet not ending it altogether....

Here we go!
