2018 OMAM blog (C period)

In Of Mice and Men, George kills his best friend Lennie. George didn't want to harm Lennie, for he was his more then a friend, he was family. But George had to or else Lennie would have a slow miserable death. Lennie loved soft things, while he was feeling Curley's wife's hair he accidentally broke her neck. He didn't know his own strength. Curley was enraged because he loved his wife so he said "'I'm gonna get him... I'll kill that son-of-a-b- myself. I'll shoot 'im in the guts'"(96). George didn't want his only family to suffer so he decided to put him out of his misery. Lennie died dreaming of what he wanted most. What would you do if your best friend (practically family) was going to suffer? Would you put them out of their misery?

Crooks is not wanted in the other rancher's room because he is an African-American, so he doesn't want them in his room. At night he just sits in his room wishing he could go into the other men's room, or have someone with him. When Crooks gets to go into their room he is just there for the other ranchers entertainment. One night Lennie came into Crooks' room Crooks said, "' ... I ain't wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain't wanted in my room'"(68). Crooks was just so lonely he had forgotten how nice it was to have someone to talk to. Crooks was very sharp with Lennie when he first entered the room, but his loneliness slowly faded. Crooks and Lennie talked about how Crooks couldn't do all the things the other men could because he was African-American. After Lennie and Crooks talked Crooks said, "'... A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody'"(72). Crooks was talking about himself. He started feeling bad for himself becau...

George and Lennie loved to talk about their dream. When they were talking about their dream together Candy overheard. Candy was very enthralled by the idea of owning a ranch. Candy tried to butt his way into their dream plans about a ranch. Candy said " I ain't much good but I could cook and tend to the chickens and hoe the garden some" (59). Candy wants to be a part of George and Lennie dream of buying a ranch so he can be useful and have someone there to take care of him before he dies. Candy would only do a little bit of work because he has a missing hand, and not many other places would hire him. However, he is willing to give up all of his money to help buy the ranch and live the American dream. This would be a good solution for everybody because it is impossible for them to do it alone. Candy thinks that the dream is a good idea, and a great investment for all of them. 

Of mice and men shows leadership through out all of the second section. Leadership was very important because it put all of the men in their place. The characters all had different amounts of power or leadership. The person with the most amount of leadership was the boss. The boss had lots of power because he was the owner of everything. Slim was thought of as the second most powerful by the ranchers, but Curly thinks he is the most powerful. Curly thinks he is a leader because he is the boss's son and its his land too. Curly "... Wore high-heeled boots and spurs to prove he was not a laboring man".(20). The ranchers were not really considered leaders bu they were of more importance than those who had a disability. The African american's and the disabled people were considered the least important because they were incapable of doing everything that a regular laborer could do. Leadership played a big role in the second section of of mice and men.
